Description
A fine antique Scottish Highland landscape oil painting by F. E. Jamieson, titled Pitlochry and signed under his known pseudonym ‘W. Richards’. The painting shows a sweeping view of the Perthshire landscape, with a cottage and winding path in the foreground, a loch or river beyond, and dramatic mountains rising into soft blue and golden light. The palette is warm and atmospheric, with russet, ochre, green and blue tones giving the scene its romantic Highland character.
Framed in a gilt frame, this is a strong size for a sitting room, study, hallway or dining room, particularly in an interior with traditional furniture, natural wood, leather, warm neutrals or country house elements. The composition has plenty of depth, drawing the eye from the foreground path through to the distant water and mountains, so it brings a real sense of landscape and openness to a room.
Jamieson’s Scottish views have a long-standing appeal, not only for their decorative warmth but for the particular place they occupy within British landscape painting. Stag Gallery has handled his work since 1989 and is in the early stages of preparing a catalogue raisonné for the artist, in which this painting will be included. His use of pseudonyms is a well-known part of his story, and gives works such as this an added layer of interest for collectors of Scottish landscape and Highland painting.
Artist Note
F. E. Jamieson was best known for his Scottish Highland landscapes and loch scenes. He often painted under a number of pseudonyms, including ‘W. Richards’, allowing him to sell through different outlets and reach a wider market. His favourite subjects included Loch Lomond, the Trossachs and broader Highland scenery, with 16 x 24 inches being one of his most typical canvas sizes.
