A beautifully observed late 19th-century study of a pink cockatoo by the accomplished British animal and bird painter Harry Bright (1846–1895).
The cockatoo is depicted perched attentively upon a wooden rail, its soft pink plumage rendered with exceptional delicacy and heightened by flashes of red, yellow and blue through the raised crest. A small feeding bowl sits alongside the bird, while a short chain hangs naturally from the perch below. Bright sets the subject against a softly worked brown background, allowing the pale plumage and intricate feather detail to stand out with particular clarity.
The oval composition and meticulous handling give the work the character of a refined Victorian natural-history portrait, while the bird’s alert expression and upright stance lend it considerable personality. Particularly attractive is Bright’s handling of the contrasting textures, from the fine feathers of the breast and crest to the polished wooden perch and metal chain.
Harry Bright (1846–1895) was a British painter and illustrator particularly celebrated for his highly detailed depictions of birds and animals. Working during the Victorian period, he became known for combining careful naturalistic observation with an appealing decorative quality. His bird studies remain particularly sought after for their precision, character and accomplished handling.
Presented in its black frame with an oval mount, this is a particularly charming example of Bright’s work and an attractive piece of Victorian ornithological art.
