A charming early 19th-century sporting scene by Augustus Samuel Boult depicting a mounted gentleman pausing at a garden gate to converse with a young woman. The elegant rider is shown seated upon a grey horse, accompanied by two attentive hunting dogs, while the rural landscape unfolds beyond. The composition captures the genteel social life of the English countryside, combining portraiture, equestrian subject matter and sporting art within a single narrative scene.

Boult’s work is noted for its appealing depictions of country pursuits and rural life, and this example displays the artist’s characteristic attention to costume, character and setting. The restrained palette and careful arrangement of figures create a pleasing sense of balance, while the inclusion of the house, gardens and distant landscape provides additional depth and atmosphere.

Presented in an attractive period-style frame bearing the artist’s name plaque.
