A colourful and highly decorative oil painting by the 20th-century artist Barbara Abrahams, entitled “The Resting Place”, depicting a group of figures and camels resting within a sun-drenched desert landscape.
Two richly adorned camels dominate the composition, surrounded by seated figures in traditional dress. Further figures and animals can be seen across the landscape, while a group of tall palm trees rises prominently to the left. In the distance, reddish mountains stretch across the horizon beneath an expansive blue and cloud-filled sky.
Abrahams has used a particularly warm and appealing palette of ochre, burnt orange, sandy yellow and earthy brown, contrasted with the cooler blues of the sky. The colourful textiles, saddles and traditional dress provide further detail and interest throughout the scene.
The painting has a strong Orientalist character, with the artist capturing both the activity and atmosphere of a desert resting place. Small details including the seated figures, vessels, rugs and resting animals give the composition a particularly narrative quality.
The original artist’s label remains attached verso, identifying the artist as Barbara Abrahams and recording the title “The Resting Place.”
A charming and atmospheric desert scene, presented in its gilt frame and particularly appealing for its rich colour, figures and camel subject matter.
