Ecole de Paris Mid 1900-1999 Place du Tertre and Sacre Coeur

Paris: Place du Tertre and Sacre Coeur, the Roman Catholic Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris by Henri Miloch (1898-1979) signed lower right watercolour and gouache painting on artist’s paper, unframed Sheet: 9.5 x 12.25 inches Delightful painting by the highly regarded painter, Henri Miloch. It depicts a view of Sacre Coeur in Montmartre, Paris as seen from Place du Tertre, with figures amid cafe parasols to the foreground. The smaller brown building in front of the view of Sacre Coeur is Paroisse Saint Pierre de Montmartre, a 12th century Catholic church. This one is signed. This work forms part of a collection we currently hold by Miloch. This one is undated but the body of Parisian work we have by this artist was dated in most cases, with this style, from the later post-war part of the 1940’s….mainly around 1948. This looks like a Springtime scene. Henri Miloch was born in Trieste (Italy) in 1898 but studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was a member of the Society of French Artists. His life and work was very much centred in Brittany, in north west France, much of his work portrays Breton maritime life in the various ports, and local town observations, especially in the Concarneau area where he worked and exhibited for much of his artistic career. From 1959 he also had a workshop in Tours (Val de Loire). condition report: The upper right hand corner is “nibbled”, the paper has weakened and there is a shallow crease. It extends only around a half-inch across the top edge from the corner and again down the right hand edge from the corner, so would be easily covered by matting and framing. Other than that this painting is in very good, clean order. Colour is good, strong, and clear.
