A charming and highly decorative English oil painting by Beryl Sedgwick, entitled “The Artist at Work”, depicting a painter working outdoors beside a tranquil river.
The artist stands before an easel in the centre of the composition, with painting equipment arranged nearby and surrounded by mature trees and lush riverside vegetation. Beyond, the calm water winds through the landscape, while a small building can be glimpsed amongst the trees.
Sedgwick employs loose, expressive brushwork and a rich palette of greens, soft blues, creams and earthy tones to capture the changing light and atmosphere of the setting. Particularly appealing is the subject of an artist caught in the act of painting the landscape before them, giving the work an intimate and engaging quality.
Presented in a substantial gilt frame with a pale inner slip, the painting has a wonderfully traditional appearance and would sit particularly well within a country house interior.
