This is so wonderfully 1970s, from the soft psychedelic background to the models hair being wrapped up in a boho fashion with a scarf. The title ‘La Femme Faune’ gives a clue to this mysterious woman. She is perched on a log stump, surrounded by leafy growth – so she is clearly portrayed as a ‘Faune’. The ‘faune’ is a mythological half human–half goat creature appearing in Ancient Rome. The goat man, (or woman in this instance) is a bipedal creature with the legs and tail of a goat and the head and torso of a man and is often depicted with goat’s horns and pointed ears. They were a symbol of fertility, and their chieftain was Silenus, a minor deity of Greek mythology. Although this doesn’t wholly apply to this stylish woman, it’s definitely suggested. Condition report: The painting and frame are both in very pleasing condition.
