Description
A vivid mid 20th century French Expressionist oil painting depicting a Provençal landscape, believed to show the Luberon Valley around Cucuron. The composition is full of strong colour, with red poppy fields, turquoise water, yellow-green land, dark blue sky and thickly painted trees. The surface is heavily worked, with broad areas of impasto giving the picture a bold, physical presence.
Although modest in size, the colour gives this painting real strength on the wall. It would work particularly well in a kitchen, hallway, sitting room, study or sunlit corner where its Provençal palette can bring warmth and energy. The reds, greens and blues would sit naturally with rustic wood, terracotta, linen, painted furniture or a more relaxed Mediterranean-inspired interior.
The painting has the appeal of a piece chosen for colour and feeling rather than neat finish. Its handling is very close in spirit to the Provençal Expressionist tradition associated with artists such as Pierre Ambrogiani, especially in the dense paint, heightened colour and love of southern French landscape. Acquired from a private collector in Provence, it has a strong regional character and a collected, slightly undiscovered quality.
