Description
A signed French Impressionist oil painting by Robert Bouille, depicting a Provençal landscape with distant mountains beyond a dense screen of trees. The composition is built around the vertical rhythm of the foreground trunks, which frame the softer greens, yellows and blue-violet hills beyond. Bouille’s handling is loose and textured, with a rich green palette and lively brushwork giving the scene a warm, sunlit quality.
At 15 x 18 inches, this is a useful smaller-scale landscape, well suited to a study, hallway, bedroom, kitchen or a grouped wall of French paintings. Its soft greens, pale blues and warm earth tones would sit particularly well with natural wood, linen, stone, painted furniture or a relaxed country interior. It brings a Provençal note without feeling overly decorative or postcard-like.
The painting has the direct appeal of a French landscape painted by someone who understood the structure of form as well as colour. Bouille’s early training in sculpture is quietly visible in the way the trunks and hillside are arranged, giving the picture more substance than a simple view. Estate provenance and the studio stamp verso add a clear and reassuring line of ownership.
Artist Note
Robert Bouille was a French artist from the Var region who studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before turning to painting. His work often explored ancient mythology and female figures, alongside landscapes and modernist studies shaped by classical and post-Cubist influences.
