Description
A large signed French modernist oil painting by Robert Surcouf, painted in 1975, depicting a richly coloured interior with bentwood chairs, an orange armchair, a table lamp and an open view beyond the window. The composition is full of pattern and movement, with strong greens, yellows, lilac, orange and brown worked across the room in a loose, expressive manner. It has the feel of a lived-in French interior, observed with affection but painted with real modernist confidence.
At nearly 40 inches wide, this is a substantial piece with plenty of decorative strength. It would sit well in a sitting room, dining room, hallway or bedroom, particularly where its warm yellows and greens can play against natural wood, rattan, linen, painted furniture or more relaxed country house furnishings. The view through the window gives the painting a sense of depth, while the interior details bring charm and character without feeling overly pretty.
Surcouf’s work has that appealing balance between French domestic subject matter and bold modernist handling. The artist’s estate provenance and 1975 Salon exhibition label add useful context, giving the painting more substance than a purely decorative interior scene. It is a strong choice for a collected, layered room, especially for someone drawn to colour, European interiors and paintings with a clear sense of place.
