Description
A subtle and contemplative abstract composition, built from softened, interlocking forms that suggest an interior or still life arrangement rather than a defined landscape.
Blocks of pale grey, muted blue, warm beige and off-white sit against one another with a quiet sense of structure. There is a suggestion of objects — perhaps vessels, furniture or architectural elements — but nothing is fully resolved, allowing the painting to remain open and interpretative.
The lighter central forms draw the eye immediately, almost glowing against the cooler surrounding tones. These are anchored by darker passages and linear accents, which provide just enough definition to hold the composition together without interrupting its softness.
Dubois-Habasque’s handling of paint is fluid and controlled, with edges that dissolve and blend, creating a gentle sense of depth and atmosphere. The overall effect is calm and balanced, with a natural rhythm that unfolds slowly the longer you look.
This is a piece that works through restraint rather than statement. It would sit particularly well in a neutral or contemporary interior, where its tonal subtlety and quiet structure can be appreciated, either as a standalone work or as part of a curated grouping.
Artist Note
Yvette Dubois-Habasque (1929–2016) was a French abstract painter whose work explores the balance between structure and atmosphere. Her compositions often sit between landscape, interior and still life, allowing form to emerge without being explicitly defined. Works from her Paris studio sale are especially sought after for their immediacy and connection to her process.
