Description
A signed Russian surrealist abstract oil painting, dated 2001, showing a strange gathering of stylised figures, birds and animal-like forms. The composition has a deliberately enigmatic quality, with the figures arranged almost like a procession or theatrical group. Soft earthy browns, greys, muted greens, lilac and pale yellow are worked across the canvas with a heavily textured surface, giving the painting a distinctive, almost fresco-like appearance.

At just under 30 inches wide, this is a strong but manageable scale for a sitting room, study, hallway or bedroom. It would sit particularly well in an interior with natural textures, antique furniture, dark woods, linen or more pared-back contemporary pieces. The muted palette keeps it easy to live with, while the subject gives it far more character than a purely decorative abstract.

This is a painting for someone drawn to the unusual and slightly mysterious. It has a collected European feel, sitting somewhere between surrealist figuration, outsider-inflected modernism and abstract storytelling. The Russian School attribution, French private collection provenance and 2001 date all add useful context, while the indistinct signature gives it the appeal of a discovered piece rather than something overly familiar.
