Description: An engaging original watercolour painting by the 20th-century French Impressionist artist, Maurice Mazeilie. This painting captures a sunny village scene with several locals walking up the road into the heart of the village. The artist’s characteristic brushwork and vivid colour palette bring life and energy to the scene. Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924 – 2021): Mazeilie lived and worked in Montmartre, where he had a studio on the famous Place du Tertre. Place du Tertre, located just a stone’s throw away from the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur, is known for its vibrant community of artists and is considered one of the key locations in Montmartre’s artistic history. Since the 1800-1899, Montmartre has been a haven for artists, housing greats like Picasso and Modigliani, and providing inspiration with its scenic streets and bustling cafés. Place du Tertre and Montmartre Art Scene: Historical Significance: Place du Tertre became known as an artist’s hub during the Belle Époque era, with painters such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, and Degas frequenting the area. By the 1900-1999, it became synonymous with art and creativity. Artist Colony: The square remains one of the few places in Paris where artists can publicly display and sell their works directly to tourists and collectors, keeping the artistic tradition alive. Mazeilie’s Legacy: His works often depict urban and coastal landscapes. He had a love for Montmartre, Paris, and the Brittany coastline, where he also maintained a studio. His impressionistic style and vibrant scenes reflect his dedication to portraying the world around him. This piece provides a glimpse into Mazeilie’s unique ability to capture the spirit of coastal life. We have a vast collection of his paintings and look forward to offering them to you over the coming weeks.”
