He worked primarily in oils and watercolors, often depicting harbors, ships, and the changing moods of the sea. Thornley was skilled at capturing the effects of light and weather, particularly in twilight and moonlit settings, which added a romantic and serene quality to his works. Although not much is widely known about his personal life, Thornley’s style reflects the influence of British Romanticism and the Victorian love for nature and the sea. His works are often compared to those of other notable maritime artists of the time, such as Clarkson Stanfield and Edward William Cooke. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and other prestigious institutions, where his seascapes and coastal imagery were well-received. Thornley’s paintings are admired for their careful attention to detail and their ability to evoke the power and beauty of the sea. Tantallon Castle, perched on cliffs overlooking the Firth of Forth in East Lothian, Scotland, is a magnificent 14th-century stronghold. Built by William Douglas, the 1st Earl of Douglas, the castle became the seat of the powerful Douglas family. Its most striking feature is the massive, curtain wall, which once served as the primary line of defense. The fortress is unique as it is a “curtain-wall castle,” with three sides protected by cliffs and the fourth by this formidable wall. Tantallon Castle endured multiple sieges, including significant attacks during the 16th century when it was involved in the political struggles between the monarchy and rebellious nobles. In 1528, it was besieged by James V and later withstood assaults during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms in the 1700 – 1799. However, the castle was heavily damaged by Oliver Cromwell’s forces in 1651, after which it was abandoned. Today, Tantallon Castle remains partially in ruins but still stands as a testament to medieval Scottish architecture and warfare. It offers visitors a glimpse into Scotland’s turbulent history, with stunning views of the surrounding coastline and nearby Bass Rock.
