Some paintings ask for attention straight away. Righetti’s tend not to. You notice them properly after a moment.
Edouard Righetti was born in Menton in 1924, into a family of fresco painters working in the Alpes-Maritimes. Craft was part of his upbringing long before he established himself as an independent artist. He went on to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier and later in Nice, before continuing his development in Paris. That grounding shows. His work always feels constructed rather than improvised.
He painted landscapes, coastal scenes, still lifes and city views. Alongside this, he was a committed engraver. Thousands of plates were produced across his career, and over two hundred are now held in the Cabinet des estampes at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Line mattered to him. Structure mattered.
You see that discipline in the paintings.

Light Without Theatrics
Righetti is often described as post-impressionist. The label fits in a broad sense, but it does not quite explain the restraint. His colour is generous but never flashy. His skies shape the mood without dominating it. Edges soften, yet the composition holds.
He rarely overworked a surface. That is harder than it sounds. Many painters cannot resist pushing further. Righetti seems to have known when to stop.
The result is work that feels settled. Not static, but settled.

Why It Endures
From a dealer’s perspective, his paintings are remarkably easy to live with. They respond well to changing light throughout the day. They sit comfortably in traditional interiors but do not feel trapped by them. They do not demand redecoration.
Collectors often tell us they were not actively searching for a Righetti. They simply found themselves returning to one particular piece again and again.
That sort of quiet pull usually signals something real.
