A beautiful late 19th-century coastal landscape by British artist Bryan Hook (1856–1925), depicting livestock grazing on rolling clifftop pastures overlooking the magnificent Cornish coast.
Painted in 1880, the composition opens across sweeping green hills towards a secluded sandy cove and the blue waters beyond. Rocky outcrops punctuate the coastline, while gentle waves break along the shore. In the foreground, a small group of goats graze across the hillside, bringing a peaceful pastoral element to the expansive coastal view.
Hook combines the rugged character of the Cornish coastline with a finely observed rural scene. Rich greens across the pasture contrast beautifully with the blues of the sea and expansive summer sky, while the elevated viewpoint creates an impressive sense of depth towards the distant horizon.
The work is signed and dated 1880 lower right and retains its original artist’s inscribed label verso. It is presented in a substantial and highly decorative antique gilt frame.
