A striking 19th-century style British sporting painting depicting three horses galloping together across a country paddock. A grey leads the group, closely followed by a chestnut and dark bay horse, all captured in full movement beneath a dramatic cloud-filled sky, startled by the distant locomotive in the background; a symbolic depiction of the social transformation in England due to the Industrial Revolution (horse power being replaced by machinery).
Attributed to the 19th century English sporting artist, Albert Clark, the work has the traditional character of Victorian equestrian painting, with the rural landscape, distant steam train and energetic horses creating a particularly appealing sporting scene. The work is apparently unsigned.
