Description
A strong original British abstract oil painting by Isaiah Gerard Calleja, dating from the 1980s. The composition is full of movement, with layered passages of red, ochre, blue, green, yellow and black worked into a dense, energetic surface. Broad gestural marks, areas of impasto and shifting shapes give the painting a distinctly expressive character, sitting somewhere between abstract expressionism and late 20th century British modernism.
The scale and colour give this piece real presence in a room. It would work particularly well in a sitting room, hallway, studio, dining space or contemporary interior where a more expressive focal point is needed. The original wooden surround frame keeps the presentation simple, allowing the colour and surface of the painting to do the work.
Calleja’s work has only recently begun to appear on the open market, having come directly from the artist’s estate. There is a rawness and independence to his paintings that gives them their appeal: bold, instinctive, and not overly polished. A good choice for a collected interior that mixes period pieces with more expressive modern art.
Artist Note
Isaiah Gerard Calleja was a British abstract painter based in the South West of England. His work was not widely exhibited during his lifetime, making estate-sourced examples an interesting discovery for collectors of post-war and late 20th century British abstraction.
