Description
A striking mid century French Cubist-style oil painting depicting a procession of small figures moving through an abstract town scene. The buildings are broken into flattened planes of ochre, terracotta, cream, pale blue and grey, with orange rooftops and angular architectural forms giving the composition its rhythm. Along the lower edge, the line of dark figures adds a wonderful sense of theatre and movement.

Framed at just over 24 inches wide, this is a very usable scale for a hallway, study, sitting room or dining space. The warm terracotta and ochre tones would sit naturally with wood, linen, plaster, stone or antique furniture, while the touches of blue give the piece a fresher, more modern note. It has enough detail to reward close looking, but the broad Cubist structure also reads well from across a room.

The appeal of this painting lies in its balance of charm and structure. It feels distinctly French, with the subject of a town gathering handled in a modern, design-led way rather than as a traditional street scene. From a private collection in France, it would suit a layered interior where European mid century painting, architecture and quiet narrative all have their place.
