Description
A warm, abstracted still life centred on the suggestion of stacked books, rendered through blocks of red, pink, cream and brown. The composition is loosely structured, with angular forms overlapping and tilting into one another, giving a sense of rhythm and quiet movement. Darker linear accents define edges and add depth, while the softer passages of colour keep the overall tone balanced and approachable.
The palette lends itself well to more intimate interior settings, particularly a study, reading room or living space where deeper tones can sit comfortably alongside wood and natural materials. Its scale makes it easy to place, either as a standalone piece or within a grouped arrangement, where its warmth can complement more neutral works.
There is a familiarity to the subject that emerges gradually, without being explicitly defined. Paintings like this tend to sit well within a layered interior, where meaning is suggested rather than fixed. It reflects a more thoughtful approach to abstraction, balancing everyday reference with a restrained, painterly language.
Artist Note
Yvette Dubois-Habasque often worked with loosely defined subjects, allowing still life and landscape to dissolve into abstract form. This piece, titled “Bouquins,” suggests her interest in everyday objects while maintaining the fluid, tonal approach characteristic of her work. Pieces from her Paris studio are valued for their subtle composition and ease within a variety of interiors.
