Description
A signed Victorian British oil painting by Richard Sebastian Bond, titled The River Crossing and dated 1864. The scene depicts a Highland river landscape, with figures walking along the riverbank, wooden eel traps in the water and a small river keeper’s cottage partly hidden among the trees. Bond gives the composition real depth, moving from the detailed foreground stream and foliage towards hazy mountains and a soft, atmospheric sky.
Framed and measuring 25 x 35 inches overall, the painting has a strong but very liveable scale. It would sit beautifully above a fireplace, sideboard or writing desk, or within a sitting room, dining room, study or country house hallway. The deep greens, browns, soft blues and warm gilt frame would work particularly well with antique furniture, leather, dark wood, wool, linen, stone or a more layered traditional interior.
There is a quiet narrative quality to this work, which gives it more interest than a simple landscape view. The figures, cottage and river details draw the eye in, while the Highland setting gives the painting that sense of distance and atmosphere so valued in Victorian landscape painting. As a signed and dated work by a listed 19th century British artist, it has both decorative strength and sound collecting appeal.
