This accomplished British equestrian oil painting depicts the horse Woodstown standing in an open landscape painted with careful attention to anatomy, stance and coat colour. The work is by Major George A. Catley (1896–1978), a noted amateur equestrian artist whose professional military background gave him first-hand knowledge of horses, particularly military mounts, hunters, and polo ponies.
Catley was known for his accurate yet sympathetic portrayals, and this painting exemplifies his ability to balance realism with a relaxed, natural setting. The horse is presented proudly in profile against rolling countryside beneath a softly clouded sky, a classic compositional approach within British sporting and equestrian art of the mid-20th century. The perfect painting for a sporting or country house themed interior.
