A highly atmospheric winter landscape by Peter Gilman (British, 1928–1984) depicting the snow-covered Norfolk countryside under a dramatic grey-blue sky.
A winding country lane leads through the composition, disappearing between a group of tall, windswept trees. Small figures walking along the snowy track provide a sense of scale and life within the otherwise quiet landscape. Beyond, the countryside opens towards a distant horizon, conveyed through subtle passages of blue, grey and white.
Gilman’s loose, expressive brushwork is particularly effective in the trees and turbulent winter sky, contrasting with the softer handling of the snow-covered foreground. Touches of warm brown and ochre break through the predominantly cool palette and give the painting depth and warmth.
The painting is presented in an attractive silver-toned frame which complements the restrained winter palette.
