A beautifully observed late 19th-century study of a white cockatoo with a striking yellow crest by the accomplished British animal and bird painter Harry Bright (1846–1895).
The bird is shown perched upon a polished wooden rail, its elegant white plumage meticulously rendered with remarkable attention to the individual feathers. Its raised yellow crest provides a vivid accent against the otherwise restrained palette, while a small feeding box and delicate chain introduce further detail to the composition.
Bright sets the cockatoo against a softly worked warm brown background, creating a strong contrast with the luminous white plumage. The oval composition and highly accomplished handling give the work the character of a refined Victorian natural-history portrait, while the bird’s alert expression and elegant pose lend it considerable personality.
Harry Bright (1846–1895) was a British painter and illustrator particularly celebrated for his highly detailed depictions of birds and animals. Working during the Victorian period, he became known for combining careful naturalistic observation with an appealing decorative quality. His bird studies remain particularly sought after for their precision, character and accomplished handling.
Presented in its black frame with an oval mount, this is a particularly attractive example of Bright’s work and forms a natural companion to the pink cockatoo of the same date and dimensions.
